I have done a single playthrough from 1890 to 1970 and one thing has confounded me like nothing else:
How exactly do helicopters work?
According to the manual they are supposed to leave their ship and hover around the edge of their detection radius. And at first this is what they did when I had only a few of them. Later on, however, in big fleet battles, they took off from their host ships in a massive swarm and ALL of them headed somewhere between North and East in a giant blob. None of them stayed behind, none of them did what they were supposed to do.
Aside from that, I have yet to see a helicopter shoot at anything, or find and sink a submarine in a naval engagement. Is there something I am overlooking? I absolutely love the concept of them but they just don't seem to work the way there were intended to. And in some battles they don't even take off in the first place despite the weather allowing them to.
(The small red dots heading out to the Northeast are the helicopters.)
This is just one example of a small fleet of CL and DD all launching their helicopters in a North-East direction. This happens in almost every single battle. And this happens regardless of whether I disable the search patterns and regardless of which direction I want air searches to be launched at.
Also, on a completely unrelated note, is there any way to disable the absolutely obnoxious popups whenever a missile hits something? It makes the lategame engagements almost unplayable because all I do is click away popups. I have disabled pretty much all alerts and pauses, but these still show up. I know that in rtw2 the missile alerts were tied to torpedo hits, but this doesn't seem to be the case here.
