I had a couple of questions for the devs/other modders about the Events list in RTW3.
For reference, this is the data file "\Rule the Waves 3\Data\Events.data" located in the game folder that seems to define most but not all of the random events where you are prompted for a choice of action, and defines the consequences for the action the player chooses. Each event is setup in the following format:
Test describing the event;<Variable 1>;;;;<Variable 2>;<start year>;<end year>;Variable 3
Choice 1 text;<Effect on Budget>;<Effect on Prestige>;<effect on Tension>;<Nation Code for Tension>;<Condition Code/Special effect caused by choice>
Choice 2 text;<Effect on Budget>;<Effect on Prestige>;<effect on Tension>;<Nation Code for Tension>;<Condition Code/Special effect caused by choice>
Choice 3 text;<Effect on Budget>;<Effect on Prestige>;<effect on Tension>;<Nation Code for Tension>;<Condition Code/Special effect caused by choice>
The existing documentation, which is located in "Rule the Waves 3\Data\BuldCampEventConditions.txt" is pretty good and gave me a lot of the above information. If you are a player who wants to modify the list of random events, including the impact of your choices in these events, I'd recommend reading through it.
I still have 3 questions about the Events.dat file and how it works though.
Question 1: What do the values I have labeled as Variable 1, Variable 2, and Variable 3 do, exactly? I think Variable 1 is the trigger/Event condition code, but I have no idea what the other two variables do.
Question 2: What are the allowed values for EffectBudget/Effect on Budget? Some events have EffectBudget values of 100 to 300, while others only have values of 1 or 2.
Question 3: Where are the events that allow you to grab new colonies defined? I don't see any in the Events.dat file. Do those events use the same encoding?
