Cdr (Rear Admiral, posthumously) Moriya Setsuji's (former CO of SUZUKAZE) destroyer NOWAKI flees the onslaught. Both American battleships - the fastest in the world - give chase at 32.5 knots. At 35,000 yards, NEW JERSEY and IOWA open fire and straddle NOWAKI with their first salvos. NOWAKI flees into the sun's glare, so at 38,000 yards both battleships fire under radar control. At 22 miles, these are the longest range shots ever fired by American battleships against an enemy vessel. At 39,000 yards, Admiral Spruance orders Cease Fire. NOWAKI escapes and eventually makes her way back to Yokosuka

That's 9 miles longer than her range, per wikipedia (not always reliable, admittedly)

That and the generally agreed upon longest range hits in real life go to Warspite and Scharnhorst at 26,000 yards, or 15 miles.

Not bad, USS New Jersey hit a Japanese Destroyer at 32 miles, first shot. Yeah...that seems a little far. 1760 * 32 = 56,320 yards. On paper, the longest range battleship gun ever mounted on a ship and actually used belonged to Littorio, firing an SAPBC shell 52,790 yards during a gunnery trial. This is according to Navweps: www.navweaps.com/Weapons/WNIT_15-50_m1934.php

Sorry for my mistake about the range of the USS New Jersey. I could not find my source. Here is the information.
