A cruiser built in 1897 with "protected cruiser" is up for a refit in 1922. Gun elevation, 4" guns to DP, fire control upgrade and so on. Can't The message>>> Error: Armoured cruisers cannot have protected cruiser armour configuration! This is an upgrade not a new build. The armor scheme can't be changed. The check fail stops even changes to its guns or firecontrol Needs to be aware that it is upgrading a design and not worry about that during upgrades.

It looks like the AI failed when it allowed an illegal design to start with and the 1903 rebuild, not when it caught the error in the 1922 rebuild.

I think beagle is correct, the original design was flawed. Pushing this to internal evaluation - thanks.

It would be the 'bug fix' applied in 1.00.37 that prevents 'CAs' having the Protected Cruiser armour scheme - as games started prior to this would allow such vessels to be built.

Though I have to ask...
Why was this a problem that needed fixing? There are pros-cons to each armor scheme already, notably weight vs druability.
Wonder if I can still make larger 10" cruisers in 1890? Ill eventually check in a new game start.

the specifics from karwa:

Feb 29, 2024 9:41:35 GMT -5 krawa said: The matter is even worse than I thought. At the moment it is impossible do recreate any of the historical 1st class Protected cruisers for a 1900 start with manually built legacy fleet. The is a mayor oversight and spoiling the fun in the early game for me.
The following classes cannot be recreated as either CA or CL, because CA may not have protective deck armor scheme and CL are restricted to 3" max for the slope:
British Edgar,Blake,Powerful and Diadem classes German Victoria Luise class French cruisers Chateaurenault and Guichen American Columbia class and Olympia
This is a substantial part of all cruisers built in the 1890s, I hope it is obvious the current system flawed.

Two remarks on this topic: 1.) The above mentioned cruiser classes are only illegal with 1900 start. For the 1890 start you can for some reason give up to 4'B when using the protective armor scheme. That means the British ships would still be illegal, but the other ships could be built as CL. 2.) I created the other thread to have a discussion how to properly treat cruisers in the first decade of the game, as I felt just looking for the armor scheme is a too limited approach.
But yes, these two topics are certainly related...
