I decided use Springsharp to illustrate the effects of upgrading a design from 6in guns to 8in guns. Here are the results. I've attempted to highlight some areas to examine but I would look at everything. If you examine the machinery, you will see that the SHP had to increase to 83,025 to maintain the speed of 32 kts. The SHP of the 6in design was 71,389. If you cannot increase the SHP, the ship will slow down. Another factor which the program does not adjust is the turret size and barbette. With a larger gun, the barbette, gun handling system and therefore the turret will have to increase in height and width. This will change the beam and this will change the length to beam. This will slow the ship down. I would have to research my books to figure this out.
Update: I found some turret data on Navweaps. Here are the two links for 8 inch 50 and 6 in 50. There is a lot more but this might be ok to assess.

In Springsharp the horsepower only increases if there are changes in the hull, not because someone swapped out the gun mountings. It would indeed be likely for a ship whose top weight increased by around 200 tons to sink into the ocean, lowering freeboard and increasing draughts, but the effects would not be so drastic as to increase power needed by 17 percent Also we should presume we are replacing 6-inch triples with 8-inch doubles, as done in game and with the Mogamis; instead, you are using single mounts, and an incorrect amount of them |
