Ships Parts for Everybody

We have a "post your best ships" thread, but I'm starting to wonder if we need a "Post your prettiest" ships thread as well.

I Made a batch of Spanish ships based on the surviving spanish fleet after the Spanish-American War (though the Armored Cruisers have been modified a bit). Another small addition to the general accessories folder I can suggest is a simple white line 1px or so that can be used just above the waterline, as in this picture:




I also made a very stereotypical German Large Seagoing Torpedo Boat last night for a Let's Play I'm participating in on another forum. This thing was heavily modified in Paint.Net afterwards though (so were the Spanish ships, as a close examination can probably tell). I quite like how these early German destroyers look. 



One thing all these ships feature (being based on older ships) is a lot of smaller superstructure pieces, which the default set is rather lacking in, IMO. I've been mostly making these by cutting up existing parts.

Keep 'em coming, might give me the push to do more than just stick a superstructure and leave them being mostly deck with a tower stuck in each side.

Glorious battlecruisers of Polish Navy:

ORP Grunwald (commissioned 1909)


OORP Kircholm, Praga, Dubienka (commissioned 1911,13,17), here ORP Kircholm in 1917, in Mediteranean Dazzle scheme during war with Austria Hungary.


ORP Biały Orzeł (commissioned 1916)


All classes took part in heavy fighting with notable examples are OORP Grunwald and Kircholm sinking UK dreadnought Barfleur and DD in Battle of Batavia in 1923, OORP Kircholm and Biały Orzeł sinking one and heavily damaging another Austrian Lissa class BC* in Battle of Cattaro in 1917, and OORP Praga, Dubienka and Orzeł Biały contributing in night battle of Hanko in 1923, where UK dreadnoughts Collingwood, Renown and 3 DDs were sunk.

Its shame some of in-game text do not accept polish letters (the ship list in main window works ok though).

*cant check name, It disappeared from sunk list as all older ships, all the ships Japan lost in both wars with me also disappeared. AI somehow manages to scrap them.

BDW, it would be great if there was an option to check dates of battles the ship took part and names of enemy ships sunk in them.

Smoke looks great, but the bow wave seems way too large. I'd prefer something smaller.

Is the flag gaff on the Grunwald part of your gussying of the pic or is it a part in the program used in a different way?

The mast has a small gaff but the large one was added in gimp.

Just noticed something while fiddling with parts, as long as the beginning of the file name is correct, you can put other text in after it. Eg: "Accessories20 KuK small flag.bmp" It even works with files with the same name before the descriptive text. So you could categorize stuff by numbers. EG: Accessories5 is all flags "Accessories5.bmp KuK Flag Small.bmp, Accessories5 KuK Flag Large.bmp, Accessories5 USA Flag Small.bmp, etc".

Might be helpful for sorting or making it easier to tell what something is and pick it out of the crowd.

Turns out organizing these files takes a while, and I kept coming up with new ideas! But hopefully I'll have something more complete and ready to upload in the next couple of days.
Here's another example of some of my new parts and doodads in progress:



No photoshop, but it is admittedly pretty time-consuming - some of the 'accessories' I've added are simply blocks/brushes of colour. Rigging can get pretty painstaking for example. But I am working on fairly easily-templated additions, like those torpedo nets you see there.

Alright, here are the files I made so far - there's about 460 new accessory files in total. I guess this will be my beta of sorts, feel free to use, reuse, edit and incorporate as you like!

Here's what's included so far:

1. New Background:



Much the same as the old one, but with a small tweak to make the water more "ripply", and to move the clouds away from the center screen while adding some extras on the side. This is mainly to make your ship easier to edit. Recommend replacing the default background with this!

2. Basic Brushes



This one's the core set of various generic shapes, which you can use to create your own bits without having to settle for one of the existing parts. It's a lot of parts and may be a bit time-consuming, but it's great when you just want to make your ship on the spot without having to open up a different graphics editor!



Included are:
-8 basic colours (meant to match the most common colours found on the default set and Nuno dos Santos' recolours
-4 decorative colours (brighter yellow/red/blue/green in small bits only)
-brushes for editing/cleaning the sky, water, horizon and ship waterline (for example, in case you mess up)

3. Lines and Rigging

Again, a bit time-consuming to work with but does give you a decent set of simple, thin lines and curves which you can use. Currently only in grey colour.



4. Small Guns



A simple set of secondary guns and small turrets, meant mainly for smaller ships to give them more flavour and variety.

5. Smoke Sprites



Separated into colours, your all-purpose set of smoke sprites you can use to stoke the boilers. For best results, combine them with each other!

6. Torpedo Nets


Available in 3 shades and 4 different boom lengths.

7. Wakes and Waves



Very much a work in progress, some sprites are still not scaled correctly. You can experiment around with these and, again, mix and match for best results!

First off, I made this from applying a thin layer of paint to @nuno dos Santos ' Set 3.  I sent him a PM about a week ago asking if I could do this, but haven't heard anything so I went on with it anyway.  Should he come back and say "no", this goes away.

But for the time being, you can now paint your ships in "lovely" Mountbatten Pink.  I really don't know why the Hell anybody would want to, any more than I understand why I went to all the boring, tedious trouble to made this entire set.  I doubt I myself will ever use it.  But I think it's kinda funny to put it on non-Brit pre-dreadnoughts.

Hello everybody.
Sorry about the delay, I was working on my set8, wich will now became set9, as I will use Bullethead's Mountbatten Pink as set8. Sorry for not responding, Bullethead, I didn't realize you were asking permission: of course you can dabble with this, ist's freeware now! One never knows when our navy can need Mountbatten Pink, so I'm adding yours to the sets, as soon as I implement on it the changes I made on the other ones - or you can do it yourself.

These are the changes:

-Removed most of the accessories that were not colour-specific from the sets folders and move them to specific accessories folders, wich are:

-Accessories: boats, rafts, chathouse windows, conning tower slits,, small guns and machine guns (including some from ccip (thanks ccip), spotlights and an eraser, to use on the original background only. (moved the  barbettes back to each set folder according to color.)

Hull accessories- anchors, bow crests, bow shield, stern catwalk, lots'a portholes, divided between sets of 1,2,4,6,or seven, and in three diferent colors, dark grey, light grey and blue (taken from galagagalaxian superb torpedo boat), the deck lines that already existed plus the red and green waterlines, and an extra 1pixel high white line as galagagalaxian sugested.

Funnel accessories- funnel caps, including the one to paint the funnel top black, plus the red funnels as decks and accessories to do the german rear funnel red look.

Flag acessories- three sized flags: the ones I had made originaly, galagagalaxian small raked ones with the pole, and an intermediate size between the two.

Backgrounds- my old backgrouds with not so dark sea color, plus the original and plus ccip reworked original (thanks ccip).

As for the set themselves:

-I've reworked the mast sequence, so that raked masts work properly, plus the masts with cranes, the military masts and the cranes are all in a row each, and not intermixed. Also, some new masts, military and latice.

Added a few small superstructure pieces: numbers 9 conning tower (the old number 9 was a repeat of number 37); number 10L (conning tower, 11L (charthouse) and 12L (rear charthouse); number 36 (charthouse/bribde), 38 (top to latice masts), 39 (conning tower), 40 (raised platform)

New acessory: sponsoon for side guns.

Some of theese are based on galagagalaxian spanish cruiser and torpedo boat, others are parts of existing parts.

Added casemates as accessories, so you can rework their position on the hull at leisure.

Torpedo tubes now have each sets base color.

removed portholes from destroyers hulls.

Finaly, I've completely reworked the bow and stern system. There are now a steep ram, plow, and clipper version for the bows on most sizes, as well as two to three diferent sterns (including the ones asked for) also for diferent sizes. They no longer have the background included so they can be used in any background. because they include the pole mast if you want to use them you have to select the Straight version of both bow and stern first, as I've removed the pole mast from these for this purpose. If you want the old straigth version you can then add the pole yourselfs, it's accessory 99 on each set.

I think I covered all, oh, and of course set8, I mean set9, russia russo-japanese war brown.

For my next trick:
Set 10, greenish sea, or something
Set 11, Black Russian (black hull and superstructure, white funnels)
Set12 All black (cause black is sexy, and also, german torpedo boats!)
Set 13 US navy (navy blue hull, grey upperworks, white tops)
Set 14 Dark grey, dark green british turret tops (british WW1 basically)

The first will take a while, the rest are combinations of existing sets.

Oh, and ccip, absolutely great work! I was going to do the bow waves, wake and smoke stacks but there's no way I can do better than you so I'm just gonna use yours.

Hey Nuno-  Thanks for letting me use your stuff.  I think you should do whatever work it needs to bring it into line with the new format.  If you need to paint anything, I just took your light gray German set and put an 80% opacity layer on top.  The pink is R153 G122 B124.

Also, thanks for all the new stuff!  I'm glad you're going to do USN paintjobs.  But for Set 13, I don't think it should have white tops.   It sounds like you want Set 13 to be Measure 22, which was like this:

• Navy Blue from the waterline up to the height of the quarterdeck, and continuing forward on that level in a straight line.
• Haze Gray for everything above that line, including not only all the guns and superstructure but also the hull sides at the bow where they were higher than the quarterdeck.

The "white tops" (which were actually Light Gray 5-L) were actually part of pre-war Measure 1.  In that, the whole ship was Dark Gray 5-D except for superstructure above the tops of the funnels, which were Light Gray.
