finished... Empire of the sun! (and 323 coastal batteries....) Decided for "all your bases are ours" mode since every war is half way around the globe.. the colonies became base support.

USA.
1904-1917: GB has the hots to go to war.
Defending 3 home waters plus SE Asia with a fledgling starting budget. Very tough. Transit from the Carribean to West coast, nightmare. Central Firing FC refit while preventing blockade and invasion, nightmare. Being invaded in the Caribbean. To be blockaded or to let go of that colony... nightmare. Germany joins the war due to no reason whatsoever... Nightmare! Finally drove the brits outta homewaters via a string of invasions. Things are looking great. But unrest is rising due to no significant battles. Germany collapses... awesome. Victory is close. Oh no. The german collapse is infecting our workers and soldiers! Crap. Unrest jumps from 2 to 10 in 4 turns. WTF?? WTF??!!!!!
The president is deposed! WE LOST THE WAR AFTER 13 YEARS OF HARD FIGHTING!!! Just as GB is also on the verge of collapse. What???!!! Poor keyboard escapes the sad fate of being smashed.
Let's try that again.
1907-1916: Beat Great Britain. Mission accomplished!
1916+: Yeah whatever. The coast is clear, have Ireland with 400 basing and I have so much.. money.... Z.. zzzzzzz

Made it to the second 25 years so far. Whenever war comes the budget tops off at 2.1 mil. Apparently it is 2^31-1 or 2147.. something or whatever the signed integer max value is... Anyway cash over fill it is. Starting to stash some of it instead of leaking them off to the army and whatnot. Base resource is more than twice that of Great Britain. Can build a freaking 8 capital ships simultaneously which has never happened before. In short, way too much money. We're due for a cleanse.

Decided to give it a rest for USA after hitting the 2nd 1950. There's just too much budget and it no longer feels like a challenge. Plus everything is researched sans 18" guns.
The most notable battle probably was a 1 v 4 BC battle in a coastal raid. The enemy had 2 x 2 BC divisions. Probably 2 BCs are from the support force. I had 2 supporting 8" CLs and a DD flot. One of the enemy BC div was made of the ABL G3 turret layout. Sent my lone BC off to duel with the other enemy BC div while charging the CL div towards the enemy ABL BC div. The CLs, supported by the DD flot, successfully circled to the BCs 6 o'clock. Naturally the AI's reaction against a charging light force is to run, and having no rearward facing guns the only thing they can shoot back with are the 6" secondaries. They are thus mainly sank by 8" guns with a few torps to finish off.
Next up... Chin China. 4000 dock size, 8" guns, huh... Hello Britain, we wanna buy ships. No? Russia? How about noodles for your Flankers rice for your 12" guns?

All the negative national characteristic modifiers grouped into one... properly summarizes Chin China it seems. As thus all capital ships are built foreign for a significant while. Bs from Britain and CAs from France, turns out can't build from Russia. To save money Bs are relatively "conservative" at 14,000 tons compared to straight to dockyard limit. Not shrinking the CAs, kept them at 16000t, for I know they will go against enemy Bs 1v1. Got 2 homewaters, NE and SE Asia. With tech significantly limiting, endemic corruption and poor education, reckon the strategic objective here is to keep to Asia for now and build up the economy. Unlike Japan capable of realizing a global empire we can only be a lot less ambitious. So, 1903 war vs Germany. Negotiated win with 4 points after 20 months. Jiao Zhouwan as reparation. -The Bs never fired a shot. All battles are cruiser fights. Despite no build area overlap this is still surprising. -"Crew training funds got stolen by government officials! Crew quality not what it seems!" WTF! A "good" crew quality means -1. 5 battles later it finally reached 0. At -1 the 10" gunned 16000t CA has difficulty against german 9" gunned 9500ton CAs. Grrr. -Got two CA vs B battles. Thank god the CAs are at least capable and had already ranked up crew quality. -Every ship is... precious. There is no funds to replenish them if lost. Add to the poor crew, battles are precarious. -SE Asia. Have no colonies there and at first didn't station ships. Turns out battles still pop out from SE Asia and it's then an auto VP loss. So still had to send a CA there. The plan is to not take any more colonies for some years until the fleet is strong enough to defend them. Somewhat regretting the decision to take the german colony now - but it's perhaps good to drive them outta the build area. Will see. It is now 1906 and war vs Russia has started. They're ofc blockading us with 7 Bs and assorted ships... This is going to be interesting.

The Russian battle fleet was defeated in a decisive fleet battle... thus the blockade is lifted. However I'd say it's more of the game AI flunking than anything else - they hugged the coastline, we naturally flotilla attacked, and those useless 1899 torpedoes actually scored multiple hits sinking 3 Bs. The other 3 were sunk mostly by our CAs. Never hug the coastline...
Our Bs are very disappointing. They don't have 7" secondaries like most other navies do. 1 v 1 they don't fare well at all against the enemy. I'm starting to wonder if I should just have built 2 Bs with higher specs instead of 3...
There is a chance here to collapse the russians and gain direct entry to Northern Europe. Based on past experiences wars are extremely drawn out and tedious without a northern europe base. However the navy is just very weak atm to defend distant colonies. Hmmm... this has become a very tough choice...

Took another negotiated win vs Russia. The march towards Europe would have to wait. The nation just doesn't have the resources to support it. No colonies were taken in the war reparation either. All incomes goes to bumping the economy. In the peaceful years a lot of tech was offered from overseas and bought them all. Goes to show how much behind the tech dev is. Germany sold us 11" Q -1 guns. Adding 4 centerline turret research and non-stop dockyard expansion, a dreadnought is possible at local yards. However the 11" -1 guns are the worst. Luckily Britain likes us very much... we even took some budget hit to bring the tension down and an alliance is signed. This alliance helped greatly! When war broke out against France, it was instantly blockaded. Thought the game had bugged out but behold the British fleet blockading the French at northern europe. Domestic shipbuilding was thus mostly diverted to British yards. From our first 32000 ton BCs to light cruisers, as well as central firing FC refits. All done during wartime. Thanks to the blockade, albeit periodic, successful cruiser skirmishes in SE Asia plus 3 CL and 8 AMC acting as raiders, the French collapsed 37 months into the war. We also invaded and took 2 of their 5 point colonies. This has been a very successful war. As the dreadnought era starts we're lagging quite behind even compared to Japan who has a weaker economy now. After the 2 BCs commission, 2 BBs are immediately laid down again in British yards. We did get TPS 1 which the Brits don't have. But their 12" Q1 guns, superimposed B turret and 10" secondaries are what we lack. Also ordered another batch of 900t destroyers. Actually France currently has the better tech, TPS 1, 13" Q 0 guns as well as TPS 1. However we decided to trust the GB alliance. Also a lot of foreign build juggling has been done. Laid down a CA with A-F-K-Y double turrets in USA yards - USA was the only one available who had main wing turrets tech. Refitted the ship with central firing FC in Britain. Followed by cross deck firing refit in Germany. Come to think of it this has been a great lesson in utilizing foreign resources. My previous France play thru got a lot of foreign FC refits. But this is the first time so much construction is done abroad, as well as relying on a foreign power to win a war.

And Chin China's laid down its first domestically built battlecruiser! Tech wise we have a lot of the good stuff thanks to all the tech sales. Got both superimposed B and X turret, which even USA doesn't have. Got TPS 2, which somehow nobody currently has. Got cross deck fire. Got a sizable dock finally. The only thing lacking is main guns, still stuck at 11" Q -1! So, we make up for it with monstrous armor (for the time period), decent speed, a lot of gun tubes and lots of rounds!... Liking the names. Ning Hai, quiet sea. Ping Hai, peaceful sea. Good.

And disaster strikes. Lost one BC to a turret flash fire. It is ofc a BC using 11" Q-1 guns. The German enemy BC is on 13" and significantly out range us. A long range gunnery duel certainly would favor the longer ranged shooter, therefore the decision was made to close in where we had higher volume of fire. The BCs were built for 29kts, but ofc plagued with so many negative modifiers it is commissioned 1kt slower. The effort to close in thus proved difficult, since the 2 enemy BCs were on 27/29kt each being fast enough themselves. As we finally managed to close to their 6 o'clock the enemy turned to their broadside and ...boom. We are again building foreign, as the choice for domestic builds on 11" -1 guns have been proven to be a mistake. Ironically tech dev has been advancing decently on other areas. AON, check; quad turrets check; TPS 2, check; 5+ centerline turrets, check; superimposed turrets check. We have everything. Except for naval guns. Despite losing a BC we accumulated enough lead to take another negotiated win. Time to order some more BCs. USA currently has the best tech - no surprise there - GB somehow is stilling failing to develop any level to TPS, so Britain is out as a builder! Plus the alliance has ended, after helping us win 2 wars. They have come out of the alliance pretty well for themselves too, taking Finland and Baltic states as colonies for the war reparation against Russia. Unfortunately tension vs the US is currently the highest coming outta the war. No matter. We're prepared to take foreign policy hits to keep tension in check. RIP Kai Chi

For whatever it's worth, I've had reasonable success with 4x4x11" and 5x4x11" ships in the past. Definitely prefer heavier guns, though. It was a crappy choice as there was no triple/quad turrets, nor Q0 guns. So 2x2x11" Q-1 vs 8x13" (enemy was broadside on at the time) was significantly disadvantaged. That and ofc some bad luck. For reference to take down a 32000t ship it required ~100 rounds of 11" hits. The ship class indeed did very good against older generation ships, but once the AI started dishing out end game designs they could no longer compete. Luckily atm France has sold us 12" Q0 and Britain sold us improved quad turrets. So 4x4x12" at home it is!

More losses. USA declares war. Here comes the capital ship freight train. I forgot about the capital ship freight train. Fatal mistake.
Naturally our fleet is divided 2 ways, at the time we have a total of 8 BBs and 6 BCs. 4 BBs are in RF to save funds - remember that I forgot about the massive capital ship freight train... 4 BBs in NE Asia for anit-blockade, 2 BCs in NE Asia for cruiser actions; 4 BCs in SE Asia for medium sized actions.
7 BBs and 12 BCs of the US Fleet with assorted light ships ambush us at NE Asia, in a unexpected fleet battle, location just outside of Tientsin (guess it's Tian Jin). Unexpected no sh*t. Luckily not all of their BCs got into the fight as usual, just 2. So it's 7 BB + 2 BC vs 4 BB + 2 BC.
The lead BC Nan Jui is the first to retire having taken 20+ hits. There is no flooding but that's just too many flotation damage, so manually detached it. The lead ship of the 4 BB div is our latest Japan built 14" gunned 64000t massive ship Shantung. But a bulkhead rupture in the middle of the fight had me detach it as well. 0 speed, hold fire and torps, while the remaining 3 BB + 1 BC carry the fight.
Soon after, the 50% flotation warning pops up on Shantung. 150 something flooding. Seeing as it's relatively close to Tian Jin I decided to bee line to port.
The battle ended with Shantung just outside of Tianjin port with 43 flooding. Ofc, if the battle had ended later, it woulda have made to port albeit barely floating. But the post battle run time assumes it sitting in the water flooding while traveling at 10 kts for 4 hours, and counts it as sank at 21 flooding.
We took down 1 BB and 1 BC with us, at the cost of an additional 6 DDs. The battle still gains 1 prestige, but the AI had out done us due to the lapse in judgement!!
And it's not over. The next turn the freight train hovers over to SE Asia and took out of our latest CAs via a magazine explosion. Ofc we took down another 2 of their BCs, but all in all, can't have this.
....
Remedies. Operationally 4 BBs in RF back to AF for sure. And each turn it's checking Indian Ocean and NAWC for the oncoming freight train and transfer ships between the 2 Asian seazones accordingly.
Systematic level, hex address found at b8222h for battle length. 800/500/1000/200 for large/small/coastal/surprise attack battles. Doubled the former 3 battles' length. Surprise attack remains same. Bit tempted to set all length to 2000 or even longer.. but will see.
Raiding wise, got 10+ raider CLs doing the work. When there is enemy BCs present is SE Asia it's mostly all thwarted so they go back to NEA and RF. When successful battles take out the BCs it's back to raiding SEA. For 4 or 5 turns there is massive success and one of the turns got the "trade disruption" message. So it still is quite effective but largely depend on how well the naval battles are fought to give the raiders space for work. Seems reasonable enough.

If the ship was sunk just outside of port from post-game flooding I'd just edit the save file to where the ship survived with a hefty repair time. More equivalent to "sunk in port" than anything.
