As has been brought up the ingame "Detach" isn't reliable as ships come back for their own reasons.
In 1.06 today my CV present took aerial torp hits so I ordered it to detach. In stead hours of game time later it had been sailing perpendicular to the axis of battle. This was also NOT in the direction of the wind nor of any friendly port. Battle was in the Baltic, north of middle, it was sailing ESE and I am playing GER vs RUS.
I cant fathom why the CV in this battle was sailing in that direction. The friendly ports were to the south. The wind was coming from the SW so air ops would suggest it turn SW. It was found to have transited ESE, perpendicular to there the battle line was shelling enemy ships.
Really would like to see the suggestion I and others have asked for a more specific "return to port" as a formation task like "screen" or "support".
The CV/CVL air ops will interupt that at times but it needs to go on the "return to port" logic which the current "detach" does >NOT< reliably do.

It's not only CVs that behave strangely:

I reloaded the battle from before losing the CV. This time as well as "Detach" I set its formation task to "Independent". This seemed to help.
For my CV case its possible the "detach" command either didnt get accepted or it went to "Support" function. Since there isn't a "Detach" or "Return to port" formation task the logic seems to be refinding the task as its logic. A user can't be sure what it will do. "Detach" as a formation task would also avoid UI errors as well as the wierd "resume task" we keep seeing.
