Another question! ;D
How does the game differentiate Coastal, Medium, and Minelaying subs?
Do minelaying subs also count as subs with torpedos? Etc?

Heck, I tend to leave the conning tower at 2" (because HE splinters suck) because of how rare it is to get hit there. Plus there's some historical basis to it in that many crews didn't use the damned thing anyhow. A conning tower hit is usually listed as a "critical" hit but I haven't noticed anything negative occurring as a result. Perhaps it reduces accuracy or rate of fire or something else? If it does have an effect I haven't noticed it.

If it penetrates it can cause some or all of: Reduce Fire control one level Reduce crew quality by one for the rest of the battle (to simulate general loss of efficiency and senior officer casualties). Lock the course of the ship for up to 8 minutes (simulating temporary confusion and loss of control).

Coastal submarines have shorter operational radius, so will only occur closer to your bases. They also have limited torpedo capacity. Medium range submarines are the general run of the mill submarine.
Minelaying submarines are much like medium range submarines, but can also lay mines. On the other hand, they have a reduced torpedo load.

There are so many different events that happen every minute in a battle it's difficult to notice that any one ship's effectiveness has been compromised. With 40 ships banging away at each other I probably wouldn't even notice if a ship completely stopped firing. Even If I don't notice it's nice to know that there's a lot of pretty interesting stuff going on under the surface. Once again, thanks for the info, Fredrik.

It's a tough choice, like so many. On the one hand, you can save some weight for something else and it very rarely takes a hit. On the other, the consequences to taking a hit are rather severe. I just pretend all my ships are HMS Vanguard, where the conning tower was just 3".

I look at it as even a well protected conning tower is a modest % of ship's displacement. For BB protection, I roughly consider the design "balanced" if the belt armor = turret armor = conning tower armor. A design may vary from that standard, but that's a rough starting point for an armor scheme for me.

Yet ANOTHER QUESTION! (Because the manual REALLY needs some gaps filled in... ;D)
Minesweepers, how do they work?
Do bigger sweepers sweep more mines? Is it the NUMBER which is important?
Do patrolling/ASW minesweepers sweep mines? Do they also take out Subs?

If I may add, does it actually matter where (which area) the minesweeper is based? Do speed, armament and range have any influence on their Efficiency?
