One of the changes listed in v1.33 b1 was "* Added development cost discount if a ship design is developed from an existing design."
Does anyone know how exactly we take advantage of that, besides I assume starting with bringing up the old ship design in the Design Ship page, and what are the rough parameters that we can change before we have gone too far to get the discount? Thanks.

Open an existing design, as you fiddle with changing things you will see the percentage of development costs change from 10% and upwards in the "developed from" field. If you change too much it will be "-" which means 100% change and no discount. Generally the following are the limits for change before it becomes an entirely new design with no discount. * Displacement can increase by a maximum of 10% or 1000 tons. * Main guns over 6 in cannot be changed. * Secondary guns over 6 in can be changed to a limited extent. * Speed can be changed by one knot. * Vertical armor can be changed by one in and horizontal armor by half an in.

Thank you Fredrik. And I noticed for it to work, you have to open the Design Ship screen by right clicking on an existing ship or one under construction and opening the design. Clicking on the main Design Ship button and opening the design from there doesn't activate the discount system. That's not a complaint, just pointing it out for anybody else who reads this and wasn't familiar with the new discount. That's why I didn't see it before.
Sorry to take up your time and thanks again.

I just noticed this, very nice feature! Though, I'd love if there was additional step, allowing things like replacing forward centerline with forward superimposed (I have a nice CA design, and then, when I wanted to build second ship of the class I got superimposed B turret for CAs...)

Hmmm, I don't see this happening. I open an existing ship, I tweak things within the above parameters, and the box that says it was developed from the original class never says anything, and I have to pay the full extra price for the new design. But I am playing with varied tech. Is that a factor?

Varied tech has not impacted the existing design discount in the game I am playing as Germans. Bullethead, did you take note of bcoopactual's post above? You do need to open the design in a specific manner to get the discount.

I go to Design Ship, click the folder to open an existing design, and select the one I want. Is there anything else?

Emphasis added. There is a reason it is done the way it is. To get the discount you must start from a ship that is in construction or in service, as only then will the initial development costs have been paid. If you were allowed to open just any design, that could be a pure design study where no development costs had been paid. Sorry if it's inconvenient or un-intuitive.

It's an awesome feature, and actually adds an extra layer of interest to designing ships for me. Do I change it that extra bit, at the expense of much higher development costs, or do I accept the gradual improvement?
