Or have the computer pick them?
I've chosen my own. I try to keep the various classes with similar names {Dog Breeds, flying insects, tribes for DDs, etc} I had a file with British ship names but lost them and had to rebuild it. I still have not completely rebuilt it {DDs are now A class, B class, etc}.
Of course my choices have not been that great. Invincible and Impregnable should have been called Unrecognizable and Unsalvageable.

i do name my own capital ships, but only to be able to quickly identify at a glance what ships i have in a battle. if ships were labeled by class name in battle i'd let the computer pick individual ships names, but alas that's not the case i.imgur.com/NxvQSfn.png

When I play the US I will name my own capital ships and cruisers. When I play other navies I use the ship lists. Like JagdFlanker I like to be able to identify classes at a glance. So I still give them names for classes but I group the names together in some fashion. For example, US battleships will have State names but all the ships in the class are geographically connected so I know which ships are California class and which ones are New York class, etc. Cruisers might all have city names from the same state and so on. For smaller ships I use the ship lists but I've gone in and modified the lists to remove or add names to preference. I'll also change the prefix for subs so I don't have to do it manually for every sub. SSC for coastal, SS for medium and SSM for minelayers.

I frequently either mod the ship list or insert my own names. My most common tactic is to name American armored cruisers after rivers or mountain ranges and light cruisers after cities or Indian tribes.

Original 13, Northern, Western, Southern. Light raiding cruisers are named for Indian tribes. Heavy Cruisers for State Capitals. I let the computer pick the names for DDs and Subs, but I like the idea on changing the prefixes for Subs to denote classes.

Sounds good. I also added a lot of names to the MS list because if if I remember right, it's pretty short and it includes names for merchants so I went here and grabbed the list of minesweepers (AM) starting with Lapwing. Now all of my minesweepers are named after birds. That means I have to name AMC's manually but I usually go down the list of busiest ports in the US like Port of New Orleans or Port of Los Angeles. My last group of AMC's I actually named after legendary creatures like Unicorn Sea and Werewolf Sea with the ' Sea' added at the end to make it sound like a merchant ship. There's no shortage of good ideas for AMC's. Edit - Actually, if your interested in the MS thing, here is my ship list so you don't have to screw with the formatting getting it from Wikipedia to notepad or whatever. You can just copy and paste the parts you like to your ship list. USAShipNames.dat (6.53 KB)

For capital ships I use the names of historical classes.
For cruisers I normally set up my own system, mainly based on town names. When playing Germany I try to have alliteration with all ships of a class, i. e. Königsberg-class will have Königsberg, Köln, Karlsruhe, Kolberg, Koblenz, Dresden-class will have Dresden, Danzig, Dessau, Dortmund etc. . This helps to understand what function the ship has without looking in the data. For destroyers I use the German number-system with some changes as G describes ships for short distance (in G ermany), S for S ervice also abroad, and V others. I start then with G1 class, next would be G100, followed by G200 etc. Ships are then numbered in this system, i. e. G 101, G 102 etc. Bigger DDs have the designation T for Torpedoboot or Z for Zerstörer. For other countries I take the AI names because I am to lazy to check the historically used names.

I sometimes use female firstnames for the MS. When playing Germany I use also river names or the names of hilly regions.

Well, I guess it's a bit of both, since for one of the early patches the Japanese names and some tweaks to US ship names were from my work I think the ship lists are pretty good for the most part The only thing I adjust are names where I want the class to follow a particular theme or pattern and something obviously sticks out. Otherwise, I prefer real-world-based naming patterns.

I mix it up, sometimes I roll with the default in-game names, other times I'll name them myself. Sometimes I'll name the ships after the order of the historic ships built (so pull out my Conways and just go through the list), other times I'll name them after towns or people. One system is to name the capital ships after close friends and family, makes me more motivated to keep the ships from sinking, lol.

Lately I've had two classes of MS. An 1100 ton ship with 24 knots, 4x5" guns and as much armor as will fit and be legal. My thinking is that they'll be more than targets on an enemy coastal raid, though I haven't seen them in action yet. I name them for types of knives and bladed weapons. The cheap class are just named MS-xx.

I'll name a ship if there's a name I like or I'll name a ship after a previous ship that did something notable. In a game as GB I had a destroyer, HMS Liffey, that torpedoed two German BBs and a BC in a fleet action. She sank just sort of making port (I was kinda sad that she didn't make it) and I named the next BB I built after her to commemorate the "destroyer that fought like a battleship"

Names that are common for me are from noble dynastis and duchies from German states for battleships (mostly predreadnoughts) - classwise and German heirs or monarchs for dreadnoughts. Battlecruiser are named for prussian and other german military leader. Armoured Cruiser receive female names from wife's of monarchs and light cruiser for German cities. Destroyer I give a letter for each year (A pretty 1900, B 1900, C 1901, etc) and a consecutive number.
