Remember that a key concept of the Dreadnought was the idea of an all big gun armament. For any size ship, you have only so much displacement to devote to armament. Put it where it counts- main guns. Secondary armament is there to fend off destroyers and is called secondary for a reason. 10-16 4" to 6" w/ 2" armor is plenty. Then pile on the big guns and armor. Tertiary is for suckers.

I don't know about being for suckers. I'll use them if I have 6 inch secondaries because there is an accuracy penalty for guns larger than 5 inches trying to hit DD's. Once I go to 5 inch secondaries on my dreadnoughts though I do get rid of them. An accuracy penalty against DDs? Is that documented anywhere?

I must have misread a comment or misunderstood the modifier that boomboomf22 is referencing. I couldn't find a source so I (finally) managed to create a fleet battle with two classes of identical battleships except for their secondary armament. One with 5 inch guns and one with 6 inch guns. Both had the same "medium guns firing at small DD" modifier when shooting at the same destroyer. So as far as I can tell, there is no penalty for 6 inch guns against destroyers that 5 inch guns don't also have. Again, I apologize for putting bad information out there. I have deleted the comment.

Ah, interesting. I didn't think to check that sorry. I guess that shows how much I use 5" guns 😀 (ie not at all)

Back when I thought only primary turrets could flash fire I used to stick a bunch of secondaries with 2" or less of armor on everything until I started using 14 or 15" guns with Directors. Sure, they're less accurate before secondary director, but with so little armor they weighed nothing compared to main armament and you could slap 24 of them on everything, whether it was an 18000 ton CA or a 36000 ton BC. The sheer volume of shells ensured you got hits, destroyers didn't dare come close, and even battleships are liable to lose a few turrets or knots of speed and catch fire when you hose them down at short range. Living the QF dream.
Even in late game I still fool around with these stupid brawler hyper-BC designs modeled after Dunkerque with superimposed quad turrets up front and tons of secondaries, even tertiaries, designed to go bow-on until the range is short and then start up the firehose.
