I've had dive bombers with 2,000lb loads before, usually by '48 or so, although it seems a bit more common for them to have 2x1,500lb a lot of the time.

I've seen guided bombs be used once or twice by my medium bombers after the tech is invented.

Early game it does to a point (an unlucky hit can still send splinters flying through your funnels and cut your sprint short, though). Late game it does not. Planes fly 10 times as fast as the fastest cruiser or battlecruiser, and if there aren't CVs around, there's always a nearby land base that will send little flying friends to ruin your day. I haven't played enough of the game yet and haven't gotten beyond the 1920s so far. How much do aircraft appear in the late game after their introduction, and do aircraft come into play in cruiser actions? Cruiser actions have always been the ones where speed paid off them most. They used to be my bread and butter battles for winning a war. I used to get into quite a few of them and would come out victorious (or else a draw) almost every time. Aircraft can show up in any battle close to land bases, and I've seen carriers show up to cruiser battles a few times. ^What he said

I've had a fair bit of success using fast battleships in the 45-50k ton range with 3x3 16" and as much armor as can be added into 1943, with the caveat that they are meant to be fairly expendable and are intended to fix the enemy line in place for massed carrier strikes more than winning the gunnery duel (although they often can). As far as light cruisers go I've built mostly 7,500-8,500t 4x3 6" designs and they work well at night or as fleet screens/AAA escorts.

I've seen the same thing, in my last fleet battle my battleships took three torpedo hits, all of which were from my own destroyers firing through my battle line to try and hit the enemy line.

could be a good idea to build at your ally's.. How long does a security agreement last in-game? I think it's five years, so enough time for around two generations of capital ships.

I've played a lot and not seen it either.

Generally, BL guns had bag ammunition, whilst QF guns used metallic cartridges.

I think the developer said at some point that the only effect was to range and penetration, but I can't remember the thread offhand.

I tend to use large batteries of 3-4 inch tertiary guns, they are actually surprisingly useful, in my last campaign they accounted for about a third of all my enemies destroyer losses, and about a tenth of the light cruiser losses. So for their tonnage they are rather good, inaccurate, yes, but rapid firing enough to compensate it seems.

Yeah, the closer you are the more often ships fire torpedoes it seems.

I've seen it, but I think the ship need's to have participated in battles to have a chance of it popping up.

True, although thinking about it, what were those cruisers doing? The ones that were in the battles but never showed up I mean. Usually there's enough of them to equal my own force, and most of those battles ended with an hours long stern chase, so I wonder what the AI was doing with them.

Oh I'm aware that it's realistic that I don't always have even numerical parity, but in my last three campaigns, I've had a total of around twenty or so cruiser battles, of them, only in four did I have numerical parity, one where I had superiority, and a few more where the enemy must have turned around immediately, as I thought while playing that I had parity, only to find at the end screen, that the AI had an extra squadron or two of cruisers that never showed up to fight, in the remaining battles, I had no less than five occasions where the enemy had at least one squadron of battleships, cruisers, or battlecruisers that did engage.
While its almost certainly just a run of bad luck, it does lead to a certain cynicism.
