Having played RTW properly again in the last few days, I have noticed that, on the design page, there is a crew complement size value proportional to the size and armourment of the ship. While I think this is clever, is there any reason for it in the game mechanics?
Also, will this feature be in RTW 2? If so, could it be related to something else such as unrest level or crewing capabilities (if a lot of crew are sunk an event linked perhaps, or maybe a total crew recruitment quota depending on nation temperament allowing the player to only have a certain amount of active crews during peacetime depending on the size of the ships)?
I realise, however, that this suggestion may be too late or too much micromanagement for the game's ethos. I therefore only request a counter of total personnel. Even if this is meaningless, I would imagine that it would bring a smile to the face of we sad fleet constructors!

The only thing I can recall it used for in RTW1 was for determining the number of survivors in the water of a sunk ship so it has a small effect on victory points. Fredrik has stated that the calculation for crew sizes was low in RTW1 and they were planning on addressing that in RTW2 so yes, the crew compliments should still be in the game. No idea if it will be used for any other mechanics. I'd expect the numbers to jump significantly, particularly when AA guns start multiplying.

As I've mentioned many months ago, it would be fascinating to have crew losses mentioned in the damage reports. I can't remember the exact developer response, but it most likely wasn't something they'd add unfortunately.
In my opinion it would be something to make the ships a bit more close to one's heart, seeing a penetrating hit not just cause a bit of structural or flooding damage, but also show that it killed 50 sailors. Ships were floating cities, they were ran by their crews, they were homes for thousands of people, and I feel the loss of crew in combat is under-represented in this game as of now.

For smaller guns, especially 3" and 4" guns the weight increase mainly comes from accomodation space of the crew handling guns, not the guns itselfs. This is one of the reasons why there is no point to have 3" guns if you can have 4" guns.

Interesting, I hadn't ever heard that before. I'd be curious to see what factors play into crew size, if range effects it significantly. Also, be sure to make your devil's post a good one.
