I bet the Italian navy would be slightly embarrassed by this result.
As you can see, it was a bombardment mission. I was massively outnumbered and outgunned; I expected that when I started the battle (my initial plan was to just run away and accept a draw). When I saw that 1: it was a bombardment mission, and 2: the sun was about to set, I decided to take my chances. I headed straight for the target.
And straight into the waiting arms of those battleships. They apparently got there before I did, and I found myself with a crossed T by a far stronger fleet, Jutland-style. Luckily for me, I'm playing Germany, so I did a 180 and ran for it. I managed to escape into the darkness, loop around, and destroy the target unhindered. I guess the battleships gave chase? Either way, for a fleet which had superiority in both numbers and firepower, and made contact, in near-ideal circumstances with the enemy, to not only lose contact with the enemy, but then also allow them to accomplish their original mission, must be a major embarrassment for the Italian navy.
To add insult to injury, we even managed to score a single 6" hit on one of the enemy battleships. It didn't penetrate, but I believe it clearly sent a message of "next time, my friends, next time!"

In every bombardment mission I expect to find superior enemy forces close by the target, so much so that I now just ignore the target and plan to get my points from sinking ships.

being rather new to to this game I jus got my first instance of a "carrier battle" in which the weather was too bad to launch planes the whole time.

One magazine explosion is certainly not enough ...

Maybe they were carrying fireworks for the Kaiser's birthday on the main deck?

They knew the Tourville-class BC had a film-crew onboard. No film crew is ever satisfied with just one explosion.

1917 as Holland. I am at war for the first time, and my English allies have added to my battle-line! Delightful! Now let's see... ... those cheeky bastards.

I may have lost two of my battleships to sink two of theirs...
... but something tells me that I came out ahead on that trade.
Also, Connecticut and Delaware may be the worst fleet carriers I have active...
... but their air groups might just be among the best on either side in this engagement - Connecticut's fighter squadrons in particular, though it probably helps that the Dominator is my most modern fighter in service.
Special mention to the Brewster Dauntless, of which 29 were deployed and managed 28 kills for only one air-to-air loss - it's really doing quite well for a 1932 fighter going up against 1936 (Supermarine Gannet D) and 1939 (Hawker Fulmar) fighters in 1942. The Grumman Shooting Star B (1937, 59 deployed, 34 kills for 31 air-to-air losses) and the Douglas Devastator (1938, 30 deployed, 21 kills for 10 air-to-air losses) are rather disappointing by comparison.

I wonder if one if my DD was infiltrated by the enemy? She put two spreads of four torpedoes directly into the side of the battleship she was supposed to be guarding. Point blank range. Did more damage than the enemy ever would.

Alas, DD commanders tend to start the game convinced that every torpedo is made of solid gold that they must pay for out of their own pocket if fired... to spraying torpedoes with wild abandon at any range and without looking to see if something is in the way. There doesn't seem to be anything you can do about it as they are uniformly stupid as a breed and you can only shoot so many before you run out.
My advice is to not put DDs on support after, say, 1915. Throw them at the enemy in flotilla attacks instead, or command them personally, but don;t let them get on the side opposite the enemy.

captainloggy - Obslotete - a combined word made from: 1) Obsolete - outmoded, no longer useful or unfashionable 2) low - down, unsportsmanlike or distasteful 3) tete - French for head It is a slang term meaning: hungover, having gone on an extended drinking session in dingy, disreputable dive bars after being declared surplus-to-requirements.
