One thing that is hard to get used to is that both sides can/will have forces in the area unrelated to the battle. So your light cruiser vs light cruiser battle might have other ships show up because they were in the area. annoying when its a couple of enemy battlecruisers, funny when its the enemy cruisers running into a pair of your battleships.

A couple of nuggets that I learned the hard way:
Take your time and think it through. Do not act impulsively in battle or when making decisions.
Winning a battle isn't always about sinking the enemy. You win if you disrupt the enemy's plans. If they are after a convoy or raiding your coast you can stop them by distracting, forcing them to turn and sail in the wrong direction, or getting them to chase you.
