Is there any way whatsoever to continue playing after 1950 has greyed out the turn button? I find it a little silly that a hard cap exists in the first place, it would be much more entertaining to be able to play as long as we wanted.
Is it possible for example to mod the save files to continue playing? If so, what file and how do I tweak it? I changed the date in one of the files to 1910, which shows up when loading the save, but the turn is still greyed out.

I am sorry, continuing on after 1950 would possibly lead to a number of errors or strange values in the game. RTW was originally intended to end after 1925, but the option to continue was added as a result of player requests, but even that is stretching things.

If gameplay/balance was disregarded, would the game itself work? Even if everyone was rocking in 52,000 displacement 18 inch ships. Or would there be actual errors?

I started getting assertion errors round about 1935. I could click past them but there were probably around 15 per turn - I think there was one for each research category.

Ah, so the game itself starts messing up when it goes too far. Hopefully in a future update it can be fixed. Unless it requires a complete code revamp/redesign.

This is not a bug and does not need to be "fixed". The game is designed to play properly (i.e. advance in technology, etc) through 1925; the option to continue after 1925 was only added because of player request so that if you have a war that is taking place in 1925 you could at least complete that war. This was clearly pointed out when the option to continue after 1925 was added to the game.

Just open your save file and change the date to ~1920 as soon as you reach 1950.
The location of the save file is C:/NWS/Rule the Waves/Save/GameX/Autosave.

Because this thread is in a similar vein, how do I go about removing the cap on ship tonnage?

You can't without fundamentally breaking the game. There's already been mods to go over the max tonnage and you get weird stuff like ships with negative weight that cost ten billion dollars to build.

I have seen some ships though that go into the 70k range on these forums.

That was before the hard coding introduced the displacement cap to stop the weird outcomes of the 70k tonners.

What is it about "1900-1925" that people don't get? This is a game about fleets in the dreadnought (and late pre-dreadnought) era (basically an alternate-WW1 era). Its a good thing that the 1925 ending date is flexible so players can finish wars or see building programs completed, but its really a stretch to continue to 1940, let alone into the atomic age (1950).
It seems to me that the whole scale, research dynamic, and enemy AI would have to radically change for this game to be extended much past 1925 and retain a semblance of historical accuracy. I'd support some minor changes in RTW itself to simulate the beginnings of useful aviation and better radio communications after about 1915-20 or so. But if you want to go to 1950 - into an era with acoustic torpedoes, guided missiles, jets, and carrier-oriented fleets, etc., it's probably better to have a RTW2 that starts in 1930 better optimized for the introduction of really effective aircraft, A/C carriers, radars, sonars, radio communications, aerial bombs, various guided weapons, etc. A connection between the two games might be to allow players to directly import their 1930 fleets from RTW1, rather than whatever legacy fleet the game created for them.

It is possible to play up to 1950. Lot of bugs and strange messages though. I had patience to finish one game with Japan up to end date. I think it would be much easier going back in time a couple of years than to 1930s and 40s. It was completly new age of warships, with radars, targeting computers, not to mention the carriers. On the other hand in order to move the start date to 1895 or even to 1890 would require much less effort as all the mechanics needed are already in place. Cutting on starting techs a little bit for all nations as well as slowing reasearch rate till 1900, adjusting budgets slightly, couple new classes of ships (monitor, ironclad, maybe some sort of commerce raider steamer) and we're done. That's the feature I'd like to see implemented, not sure if anyone shares my enthusiasm.

Having the start date moved back by some 20-25 years would definitely be something i'd like to see. Though it'd probably also meant some changes to how the armour is applied in the ship designer, and handled by the game. To reflect r&d in that area.

In my opinion, moving into the earlier period is more interesting from a ship design perspective than the 1920's and there is no requirement for pesky aircraft. I have made some historical ships of this era using S&I RJW, going as far back as the Colossus which was commissioned in 1886 and these work ok (not really surprising as a few antiques appear in the base game). In my opinion, it would only really be necessary to account for less effective armor by applying a weight modifier, quick fire guns and some negative gunnery factors to reflect inferior rates of fire and shells. Myself, I would be happy to pay for this as an expansion to the game.
