Love what you've accomplished so far I'm thinking about making my own nation name replacement mod, how much goes into swapping the name and some of the flavor text? A month ago I would have needed to ask jeeweej or cv10 , but plunging into it makes you an expert by necessity.
It depends how big the change is. Replacing AH in a Germany start was not hard, China already existed. Turning Germany into the HRE wasn't too hard, it just involved combining naming groups and adding territories. Adding Venice Crete and Palma as their own possessions was intimidating, but not hard once I looked at it. They existed already, I just had to break them off onto their own. Making War Missions *is* hard, well tedius, which is why I simply used AH & Germany's together.
So the moral of this story is if your aspirations are modest (for instance, making Scotland a playable state), you should be able to manage it with a day's trial and error. If you want to make something wholly original like Atlantis and place it in the Canary Isles, that *would* be rather hard because you'd need to create a port of two and a lot or war missions.
"So what I told you was true, from a certain point of view."

What was the reasoning for adding HRE as nation 10 instead of replacing Germany as nation 0 outright? Is there anything unintuitive that's necessary to prevent these nations from conflicting in an HRE game?

Originally I did replace it, but that created the problems I spoke of where the mod made the save unusable for any other nation, so I went back and copied HRE as a new nation and restored Germany; that's what happens when you get an idea and go without thinking ahead.

And doing so doesn't make anything explode with the original Germany in an HRE game?

Replacing a nation? It makes that nation unplayable, that's why copying and adding a nation is the right way to go.

I mean in an HRE game, what prevents the nation files for Germany for messing things up in that game? Like both nations having the same claimed territory, etc. How do you guarantee that the HRE file code overwrites the German file code?

Technically speaking when creating a new nation it comes with a WarInfo file, a file that contains all the missions and all the AI nations you'll face. So when you replace Germany with, say, the HRE...all you have to do is make sure Germany is not included in that file. If it isn't in the WarInfo file, it won't load the nation data.
