I've had a couple great victories and a few horrendous defeats but this one was probably shaping up to be my greatest victory until I lost a BC toward the later half of the battle to a torpedo from what appeared to be a CA that was dead in the water. Although the Germans got thoroughly destroyed, it ended in somewhat of a bittersweet tone. I only have 4 capital ships in service now and I know there are about a dozen enemy capital ships based in Northeast Asia since my war with them began. Fortunately all my capital ships are BCs and can outrun most of the German fleet so I can at least pick and choose my battles. As the underdog Japanese I've found that speed is the best weapon in my arsenal.

Awesome video! Loved the torpedo comments. You make some tough warships.

France vs the entire Royal Navy at the time. I had 5 battleships against the 16 battleships and 6 crusiers of the enemy. I still came out on top against what were the most overwhelmings odds in any fleet battle I fought up to date.

Not sure how this turned out to be a "major" victory for my guys, we lost a BC, but I suppose I shouldn't complain. The battle (near Pensacola) started out well with two of my BCs running down a French CA and sinking it. Then in the middle of night my BCs found themselves in the middle of a swarm of enemy cruisers and DDs and one had fish for dinner. So I spent the rest of the night tracking down as many enemy ships as I could with my remaining BC to sink them one at a time. I guess the fervid desire for revenge must have worked. All the newspapers back home are reporting it a major CSA victory!

Interesting. When I closed out of the combat screen, I got the message that it was a "Marginal victory" not a "major" one.

Germany versus the entire RN: The battle started off quite badly, with the battle cruisers running into the RN battle line right off the bat, thankfully they were able to keep the majority of the enemy B's from firing at them whilst engaging the forward ships and leading them to my own battle line. Edit: This was the very next battle: I went in expecting a difficult battle, but the first salvos saw two RN battle cruisers being turned into fireworks displays by magazine detonations.

Night time suprise attack as Japan in 1922 against the British at Weihaiwei. This is the second successful suprise attack this game, the first was against Russia around 1912 or so, sinking 3 B. This was much more devastating, with two of the BC's sunk being some of the RN's newest (~1919). Most of my DD's were carrying either 3x3 or 2x4 launchers, and night and torpedo training. Very worth it. Not one of the capital ships actually got underway before getting hammered, and two of the CL were basically collateral damage. As my main force was only 4 13000t CA, I had decided from the start to only go in with the DD's, so was too far off to come finish off stragglers before the battle ended.

I'm in a tense game as Italy with my primary opponent being Austria. I built a lot of light forces early with some good CAs for commerce raiding but couldn't afford many Bs. Austria built a lot of small B's (eventually 8 of the same class), then followed up with bigger and better stuff - two real BBs and 2 BCs they got completed while a naval treaty scrapped mine on the ways.
So with research and treaty limitations I wound up with 3 semi-battlecruisers (4x13", 12x10" guns, 26 knots) and 3 semi-dreadnoughts (4x12" and 16x10", 20 knots). Austria's whole fleet came out to play, 2 battlecruisers in the lead (6x12", 26 knots). My lead S-BC got hit hard early and often, but I got NW of the Austrians while my battle-line moved east, catching the 2 Austrian BC's in the angle. If a computer can show surprise, I'd say those 2 BC's were shocked when the S-BB's showed up. They went one way and then another and finally made a death-ride right at my S-BC's. Then one Austrian exploded... and the other went dead in the water and my DDs put in four fish.
I'd been tormented by those things for 18 months of war and gotten shot up by them often, so killing them was very sweet. The Austrians quit trying to force fleet engagements, too...

I don't have the stats sheet, sadly, but I just finished a game as the USA with CSA and Spain both in the mix. Objective: clear the Caribbean of Rebels and Spaniards... and I did.
The 'final' battle was in the Second Confederate Caribbean War (of four). They had three BBs, a pair of BCs and about 9 Bs. I had fewer but generally bigger and better ships (no Bs but I did have 3 semi-dreadnoughts), and I had some really stellar big DDs with 8 torpedo tubes and 6x5" guns, and gun directors. He made the mistake of opening a fleet engagement in the twilight. Had I been smart I'd have declined - the USN had gunnery and torpedo training but no night training. But when I tried to disengage he turned to come after me... and I got mad and went straight back at him. He got a little disorganized... and my DDs blew nice holes in his screen... so New Mexico led the line down between his two columns while battered BCs Saratoga and Lexington came down the outside. When the range is under 6000 yards, you can land some hits, and when you're putting six or eight hits on a ship in one firing round, it tends to stop... and stopping in front of my DDs was a death sentence. One poor B took 12 torps... at least... I lost count.
End result: somehow, miraculously, only one of my capital ships got torpedoed, and she lived. The rebel admiral lost 2 BBs, 1 BC and 6 Bs plus about 8 destroyers, I lost no capital ships though Sara and Massachusetts needed some drydock time. We had two more wars after that (his tension level stayed high) but he never really managed to rebuild since every war ended in him going down in rebellion (heh) and me grabbing his best new BB.
Now I'm playing out a Byzantium campaign. Got my tail in a crack with wars with Italy and Spain at the same time. Great Britain is my ally but frankly they aren't helping much, and the Greek Navy in this game are the worst shots I've ever seen.

Just finishing up my second campaign. The first playing as CSA, and currently as USA v CSA, I have not seen many fleet engagements. There was a large dreadnought battle against the CSA early on, but no capital ships were sunk. Now 20 years in, I have dismantled the CSA, and have picked a fight with Great Britain. After some cruiser engagements I was finally able to draw a capital ship battle in a convoy defense. My fairly new BB Connecticut, meets their newly commissioned BC Indefatigable. A 37,500 ton beast with 9 15 inch guns and plenty of armor. Contact was made about 10,000 yards out in the mist, and a very short fight ensued. The battle-cruisers were taken by surprise and tried to retreat. But in the span of 4 minutes two British battle-cruisers were destroyed by BB Connecticut. I have never seen anything like that before. Later in the engagement I was able to track down the BB Renown, a firefight ensued. Nearly sunk her too but as night fell I was unwilling to send Connecticut closer into a possible torpedo attack. We never found the BC Illustrious, guess she got her signals mixed up in the bad weather. In my relatively brief experience with the game, this was without a doubt the standout battle.

Greatest loss - first game I played, playing as japan. first war is with russia. 6 battles in. major fleet action at Tsushima. every single japanese ship present lost. sank one russian DD. worst part - I outnumbered them roughly 3:2 in each ship category.
Most Hair pulling loss - Losing the Achilles, a superheavy Spartiate class cruiser to a torpedo from a sinking french cruiser half its size, who had failed to even scratch the achilles with its guns. I had pulled to a near halt right alongside the immobile cruiser to pound it until it dissappeared in the hope of getting some bonus points for survivors. The enemy ship has sunk message popped up the turn after the torp hit. three turns later so had the Acchilles. turned out to be an ironic name.
Best Victory? hard to say. Sinking a battlecruiser that kept escaping battle after battle? destroying every french dread and most of their cruisers almost without damage, all in 2 hours and via turret explosions? having an elderly CA face up against a battle line of 4 ships, two of them predreads and win, sinking one of the battleships? having a CA sink a BB in a one on one gun duel? sinking an entire convoy and all it's escorts with a single cruiser, without ever taking a hit? Making a fleet without any non-forward firing primarys, then sinking a larger enemy cruiser while running away, with a lucky 3" shot?
