I was just wondering whether or not the actual type of ship you assign to Coastal Patrol duty actually makes a difference in the game.
On one campaign, I thought I'd try using old Destroyers for Coastal Patrol, figuring their torpedoes would make a nasty surprise during those late-night coastal raids. When a Coastal Raid battle did happen, my Destroyers I had put on CP were nowhere to be seen, instead I had a bunch of generic MS boats running around.
So does it matter what type of ships you use for patrol duty, or am I just trying to fill a number requirement? If it doesn't matter, would it be possible to implement in the future?

Ships on coastal patrol have a chance to show up as patrolling ships in battles in the area where they patrol. If too few are available, some generic patrol boats of very limited value except reporting the enemy will be thrown in.
The type of ship will also influence how effective they are against submarines, with MS and DD being best. Obsolete ships will perform be less effective. Q-ships (AMC) can be effective against subs if you have invented q-ships.

i personally build 30+ 200t MS at the beginning of the game and i keep the same ones until end-game by doing blank refits on them after every war or before they hit 8 years since their last refit. they'r dirt cheap to build and maintain so i find them much better than using/reusing any other ship type. it's not worth upgrading their fire control later on since you never directly control them in battle and they can't really fight back against larger ships anyways make sure i always have at least double the patrol requirement to maximize their abilities, and to date i'v had almost no issues with my ships hitting mines and my ships rarely get torped by enemy subs even when i hit 1940 or later and still using refurbished start-game MS i attached the ship design file for anyone interested. i keep it in the save root directory so i can have quick access to it when i start a new game Attachments:MS-1.10d (4.18 KB)

Yeah, I ALWAYS make 60 200 ton MS in the start, and simply give them oil firing later.
Its a little silly that 200 ton dinghies can take on latewar submarines, which commonly were capable of taking out smaller destroyers...(That reminds me...Can we have a rather powerful 'cruiser' submarine?...)

Wow! I don't build that many MS - maybe 2 to 4 more than are needed, and I put those in reserve as soon as the war is over. It is a bit annoying that MS can just scrap themselves in peacetime without warning. I'm fine with them occasionally going away - those are frail, cheap hulls not intended for 20+ years of service - but I would rather have some notice when they go.

Yeah, MS shouldn't do that. The ships go obsolete like others but they shouldn't auto-scrap for any reason.

MS do indeed scrap themselves after 8 years.

MS will scrap themselves, gradually and usually after the (O) appears beside their construction date.
All AMC are scrapped as soon as peace comes.

MS do indeed scrap themselves after 8 years. Do a blank overhaul as soon as they're listed as obsolete, although I think I'm probably the only person who actually redesigns my MS several times.

Before the update restricting MS to 24 knots, I would build 10-12 of them for killing AMCs and handling patrols/foreign station requirements. They were also highly effective at killing enemy destroyers, due to a 35 knot top speed and a heavy broadside of 5" guns. I would usually rebuild them 3-4 times in a game, because that was so much cheaper than building more.

I find they get murdered by submarines (How a WW1 sub can torpedo a 200 ton fast vessel is beyond me...), so I keep 60 on hand. They're cheap as chips, so more the merrier.
