If your tech is maxed, get AMCs on CP. After all, the Q-ships are a thing, and subs might be tempted to pick a fight with something with a bit more gun than a ms.

Yeah, if they fire their torps, it's a nightmare for the enemy... if.

I'd pick slower capital ship build up mixed with light forces. The monthly cost for one BC could probably cover for the cost of its escorts. Sure, I'd end up with less big ships, but that's why you pick your fights and grind them down with attrition.

It does make for an interesting -if boring, tonnage-wise- game. It was also how I discovered how the system seems to consider some 2-turret ships as dreadnoughts.

20% Tech (or as low as it can get), and Variable Tech as well. Let's say torpedoes aren't a thing.
I'm planning to write down my thoughts on this kind of game. It kinda turns the status quo upside down.

I'm feeling more and more tempted to do a low-tech Byzantium game. Maybe if I ever decide to finally replace my laptop with something better, to do it as a video Let's Play.

garrisonchisholm - I think Spain is about the only country I haven't played in RtW. Every time I think about it I go play the US or Germany to get over the depression LOL. ... my RtW Let's Play was done with Spain, when I barely had a grip on the subject. It was a bit like bad sex: too fast and not noteworthy. Also, it's in SA? So, can we expect that it will end up on the Let's Play Archive website eventually?

I played around with the idea of having two different kinds of main guns but it's just not viable because secondary batteries and 18 guns take so long to show up. But if they were available sooner I think it would be interesting to play around with having a secondary battery of 14 inch guns to fight against conventional battleships. Then I would also give the battleship a pair of 18 inch cannons to overcompensate (...for the enemy armor). It's ironic in a couple ways. First it's a regression back from the "all big gun" concept and secondly the game would label a ship with only two main guns as a pre-dreadnought when it's actually a specialized dreadnought killer. I absolutely love the nutty concepts this game prompts. To solve the predread issue, just add a third centerline single somewhere, makes it a BB Huh... I never really thought about it thoroughly, but low tech games do allow for 2 main gun turret BB/BCs, as long as the first two techs are researched at the very least. I only realized this when I realized the AI was building BCs in the first few years, which I found weird (20% tech), and tried to design one of my own.

I add speed to my later battleships to catch up with their own BBs even if they try to run. It also helps that it actually allows me to pursue older BCs.

just tried to build a CL i'v built sucessfully pre-patch if i have any sized turret in the forward 1 and 2 position it gives me an illegal ship configuration error Not related, but does the Protected Cruiser armor config even benefit from BE and DE?

I usually let the game name my ships, even though my my minesweepers end off having more flavourful names than my DDs (And renaming destroyers one by one, like I tried to do with my 500t Dromon-1 class, is a pain in rear).
Then again, with the amount of signal misunderstandings ships have in low tech games, they'd all be named 'Energúmeno', for my reaction at them screwing up twice in the same amount of minutes.
