(don't know why it is so popular) Because you don't have to worry about foreign stations and you can avoid blockade from almost all nations. It's a good starter nation to get the hang of the new features.

I'm kind of surprised with the amount of attention Japan gets - I would have never expected it to be this popular.
Personally, I will continue my time-honoured practice of playing Almost Exclusively Austria (tm), and see what the game has in store for them. Rapid Economic Growth after twenties or riot!

Just wanted to mention that I have released a "mod" for a less crappy 1920 legacy fleet (essentially the IDes folder without the worst, but not all, cramped+short range legacy designs):
The 1920 starting fleets still have way too many capital ships and so on, but at least you do not have heaps of cramped and short ranged ships all over the place.

I find it interesting that japan is so popular. Not surprising, but interesting. Not surprised at all, that everyone wants to start in 1900.
I too, will be starting as Japan in 1900, but I doubt that was surprising to anyone :3

France was great in RTW1, I’m excited to take a crack again here.
How practical would it be to build Tumblehome CVs?

I mostly like Japan thematically as an up and coming naval power, same sort of reason I play them in Victoria 2, I would rather play a secondary power rising over time than starting as one of the big boys.

I don't have much experience with colonies, since I only ever play as japan. There I usually try to keep my reach limited to NE and SE asia. I think in rtwII I'm probably going to end up expanding that a bit though, as getting access to oil seems more important, and having a good base to set up a surprise attack against the Americans both seem like bigger priorities.
I gotta agree though, I like starting as one of the smaller powers and working my way up. That's why I havent played as GB, I also havent played as america for a similar though not the same reason, since they rise so meteorically.

To try something I normally wouldn't I decided to take a crack at Russia. I wanted to stay in Europe, but didn't want to play the big contenders straight away. I was very much thinking of Austria Hungry, but that might prove a little too difficult for a first time playthrough.

Japan has always been my RTW1 default favorite. I will probably do Austria Hungary, since they are another favorite.

You get oil for free and the ability to beat up Italy at your leisure. Meanwhile, Russia has to contend with lack of any meaningful tech advantages (that will possibly change), poor education and reduced blockade tonnage needed, not to mention 2 fronts to fight at, distant from each other.

I just find colonies tedious, need to station ships across the globe and have to pay attention to how powerful the enemy is in each sea section. As Russia I have two sea zones to worry about at the start, as Italy one, and as Japan two or three close together sea zones. With Britain, France, and Germany you need to cover everything from East Asia and the Pacific to Northern Europe with lots of sea zones in between that you have to protect. I also tend to group together my conquests, Eg. controlling all of the western Hemisphere as America, or controlling all of China and Southeast Asia as Japan, or dominating the Mediterranean as Italy.

Japan has always been my RTW1 default favorite. I will probably do Austria Hungary, since they are another favorite. Same here, almost always play as Japan. I like not having too many far flung possessions to defend and the fleet size is about right for me for full on fleet battles. Too many ships on the screen and I get lost in the chaos.

Will definitely start with Japan in 1900 for the first game. The changes to the Pacific map are most interesting and I can see a lot of back and forth for colonies there. Gonna have to build up Formosa for the eventual push south but will otherwise focus on the home region in an attempt to kick out the French and Germans with the help of the Brits(hopefully). After that its 'what can I pick up south of me' time.

I'm gonna go Germany, Going to build Quality over quantity and focus on getting out the airpower before anyone else and beating the British and taking their empire!
