But yes the DRM has to be the worst implementation of any drm so far solely due to the way you have to activate it.
Hard to beat the old Starforce for 'worst', a miserable piece of code that had many allegations of killing drives, stealing data, and remaining on PCs despite removal software claiming to have deleted it. In comparison, the RTW2 DRM is just a bloated, slow and horrifically user unfriendly method, that only kills interest and drives away customers.

in my oppinion Gabe Newell (guy who co created steam) explained/described why pirating happens best
"We think there is a fundamental misconception about piracy. Piracy is almost always a service problem and not a pricing problem," "If a pirate offers a product anywhere in the world, 24 x 7, purchasable from the convenience of your personal computer, and the legal provider says the product is region-locked, will come to your country 3 months after the US release, and can only be purchased at a brick and mortar store, then the pirate's service is more valuable."
the simple fact that getting a game on steam and playing it is so much better than pirating one combined with the fact of summer/winter sales and the game being "intertwined" in the community such as easy screenshot/artwork sharing steam workshop (which could work for this game instead of having to send savegame/ship design files over discord)
the exact same problem is actually plaguing the film streaming service sector right now where you have many options such as Netflix HBO and a bunch of others each having exclusive shows you might want to watch so in the end you either subscribe to 5 or more different services just to watch a handfull of shows or you whip out ye olde reliable pirate hat and cutlass and set sail
(on top of the fact some of these services might be country restricted a problem i have ran into SEVERAL times)
for anyone asking no i dont pirate games (and havent) but i do pirate exclusive shows/anything which i need 3-4 subscriptions just to watch 4-5 things or things where i have literally 0 choice due to "this content is restricted in your country"
i recently got a new PC but im not even gonna bother setting up RTW (i know for a fact i will need a new code and cant be bothered) so im probably just gonna wait for the DLC until i play again
also ease of access and discovery also MASSIVELY helps user experience if you search for a game on steam the it pops up and from there you can immediately see the game reviews the community artwork the price and developer updates
also to all the people I've recommended the game to they just refuse to buy it considering the DRM and price
My 2 cents on this issue il fade back into my hole until the DLC comes out where i might visit the forums again

What if the devs published this game on Steam but upped the Steam price due to their massive cut and the revenue lost to piracy? It's a niche game, look at how much those Gary Grigsby games cost.

Despite the extraordinary amounts of common sense in this thread, I don't think the devs are reading it any more

honestly just release the game on steam for like 45 bucks and see what happens if its not successful remove the ability to buy it
it would atleast make it easier to have a "common" game hub so to say steam has alot more built in community support than for example this forum

Both the store venue and the DRM are massively and negatively impacting sales potential for RTW, beyond any (to me) conceivable impact from piracy. This is an early nineties business model, with the exception of using downloads and not floppy disk per post and an online forum instead of back-of-magazine ads. There are even (inaccurate) rumours out there in the Steam forums about the RTW2 DRM requiring regular new activation codes sent out by individual email from the developers...
And on Steam there are now a lot of games either mechanically and/or thematically close to RTW (Ultimate Admiral (both), High Fleet, War on the Sea, Sprocket, Airships Conquer the Skies etc.). There is a lot of market potential for "niche" games there. And with the rise of "pixel-art" games even RTW graphics will not be a total turn-off.

Should RTW2 ever make it on Steam and fail to top its original launch month sales in the first month on Steam, you can call me Meyer

At least you only had to have a active internet connection to activate it

Thank you for finally removing the DRM. It has been the major obstacle for me to recommend the game for others.
