In my own mind I was bemusedly considering Japanese commandos sneaking ashore weeks before the attack, each with a 50 pound piece of their submarine on their back, which they then assembled in a creek by night while posing as a road-crew during the day. That sounds like a Hogan's Heroes type movie!

Or - even worse - transporting critical masses of bubble wrap.

Or - even worse - transporting critical masses of bubble wrap. Bubble wrap is bad!?!! I've been using it and ping pong balls in lieu of BE and Torpedo Defense.

What size do you play the game? 1400 is for very large fleets. I have only about 400 the whole fleet in 1924. Even with sunk ships it would not go over 500.

While looking at aeson's picture, I tried to clear the message window by clicking the "close" button. I may have too many hours in this game, lol.

Very Large fleet, game budget, if I recall correctly. Unfortunately, the save file seems to have become corrupted when my computer crashed last night, as when I loaded it today I got a lot of illegal ship type errors, unknown location errors, and a couple could not find nation: Japan errors.

I have just some interesting battle. It was convoy attack.
My 2 battlecruisers have sailed directly into the convoy firing on all sides. I have been so focus on that I have not known Italian battlecruiser was closing as I have been looking at hits of 15" guns and there was no hits to BC.
When I noticed that because of zoom in the enemy battlecruiser (4x3x14") was less than 5000 yards going straight against my 2 battlecruisers. I was quite worried as my battlecruiser would have no problem to sink enemy cruiser at distance but from this distance any unlucky hit could penetrate my magazines or turrets blowing my ships. So I change course quickly to use my broadside. However even at that time both my battlecruisers fired their main guns to sinking armored merchant cruiser and destroyer. Enemy closing 3000 yards turning right to unleashed her broadside. I was quite worry so I start maneuvering rapidly to use time and my firepower (2 ships with 4x2x15" guns) to my advantage.
I have been lucky 3 enemy main turrets were quickly disabled so I have started to think how to increase distance as I have been too close to battlecruiser screens.
So I have continued to maneuvre - changing course rapidly and I have hoped that none of enemy torpedoes would hit the ships. Both ships have no TDS at all as my first TDS research was lvl 4 in 1922 (I have been lucky that I did not loose any capital ships to torpedoes yet).
But at that time I have run out o luck. Vorarlberg and Slavonien were hit by torpedo with flooding almost 400 tons per minute. It have been still manageble but I needed to get ships out of danger. It was not possible, Slavonien was hit for the second time. Flooding has increased more than 700 tons per minute. I have started to think I had lost one of my best ships (she is with Vorarlberg the most succesfull ship saving several other capital ships, sinking a lot of enemy capital ships).
I decrease speed to 8 knots at once. Luckily both ships were at that time on course away from battle and my screen start to do their job.
I have just monitor the crew decreasing flooding and look that ship has between 10-20 minutes of life. However finally crew was succesfull to decrease flooding to rate 3 tons per minute and with calm weather it gave me a chance.
Now it has looked promising that the scenario with 2 hours of after scenario flooding will be sufficient to save the ship. So I have started looking on timing of scenario. 500/500 - it has not been an end - why? Ou, my light cruiser have been fighting Italian light cruiser. What to do as playing Admiral mode I cannot withdraw cruiser.
But now I has been lucky again, the night was comming and finaly 573/500 ends scenario. And the most anticipated scenario result report was awaiting. "Heavy damage - uff" So look on ship (picture bellow). 16 minutes and she was sunk. Finally I was quite lucky, both battlecruisers survived and can continue to sink British fleet as Italian fleet has only last battlecruiser left.

Those times when entire flotillas of destroyers unleash torpedoes into an enemy battleline, only to score 1 hit...on an enemy destroyer.
