You can make the forward and aft main gun turrets casemates by making the number of guns per mount 0. I wouldn't do it from a game play perspective but if you are just trying recreate a Confederate ironclad in-game that would be closer to historical. From the mod I'm working on- Broadside Ironclads from the same time period The quick-firing guns and torpedoes obviously came later

You are trying to get a lot done on a small displacement. That's not a criticism - that's the point of the game, I think. I know I spend a lot of time plotting and planning over how to save a few tons.
The main armament is perfectly acceptable; the top speed is also fine for a squadron speed of 16 knots. Armor design practice of the day went back and forth over whether to armor the ends of the vessel. 'Not' would eventually win out, which looks like what you are aiming at. 12" is thicker than I would use on a vessel of this size; given the low hit-probability of pre-dreadnought-era guns, I'd think 9" would be sufficient. That frees up some tonnage to put better armor on the main turrets and secondaries; with 3" of armor for 10" shells you are risking a historic end to your 'Virginia'. (Both the 'Virginia' and 'Virginia II' were blown up.) 10" is too large for a casemate gun to be worked effectively. I would drop the caliber to 8" myself, or experiment with secondary turrets. Bear in mind that the secondaries will have no gunnery direction at all, so only a larger number of guns will achieve much in the way of hits.
Now, with all that said, I am in favor of experimenting with new ideas (so long as it is not my money, ships and lives at stake LOL). Build her, fight her and let us know what you find out.

Don't feed the Trolls. They just get bigger and more numerous.

Assuming the above is regarding my Viriginas, I should point out that my shipyards can only build around 14000 tons. My initial plan was to go for a 13000 ton vessel and add to it, but then I had free tonnage after putting in what I wanted, so I figured I'd go down on the tonnage instead. Just wanted to point out that going a lot bigger wasn't really an option, but thanks for the complement regardless.
I appreciate everyone's thoughts on the vessel. If I didn't already have two Viriginia designs going, I'll try for a third. As is, I will probably wait a couple months in-game, by which the tech available might be different.
Glad to see I'm not the only one interested in modelling a Merrimack in-game. Seawolf, how are your designs fairing? Also, I noticed your mod is set before 1899. Are you able to model the invention of the armored turret, and the fact that 2 armored turrets was itself an improvement over 1?

Just an historical note: There were all total about six USS Merrimack's. The first was the 1798 which sunk off Cape Cod, the last a Cimarron-class fleet oiler. Another fact, which is meaningless. The CSS Virginia's freeboard was about twelve feet although she was designed to have the bow and stern submerged. Based on current naval architecture, the freeboard should have been about 16.2 feet.

He's just getting with the black and white spirit of the times. Yes, the Confederacy had a very black and white view of society.
