I observed that the maximum ranges of “modern” 8” and 6” main guns are, in my opinion, too much short. In my games, American and Japanese CA 8” gun class +1 had only less than 19.000 yds of maximum range still in 1940s; likewise, CL 6” guns had no more than 15.000 yds of maximum range. In WWII CA often fired (and sometimes hit) at range well over 20.000 yds and CL at range well over 15.000 yds. I think that after 1925 a maximum range at least of 25.000 yds for 8” main guns and 20.000 yds for 6” main gun could be more appropriate.

Trying to collect some data for engagement ranges River Plate ~ 18,000 Yards (8 Inch) Calabria ~20,000 Yards (6 inch) Cape Spartivento ~ 23,500 Yards (8 Inch) Cape Spada ~ 17,500/21,000 Yards (Italian/British)(6 inch) Cape Matapan ~ 24,000 Yards (8 Inch) In addition, looking at the claimed ranges here, gives somewhere around 16-21k Yards for WW2 era 6 inch guns and 25-30k Yards for 8 inch guns

Lacroix, Japanese Cruisers of the Pacific War). More in general, WWII 8” gun firing ranges were not very different from those of the capital ship big guns.
