Do the characteristics of ships and aircraft affect their performance off - screen? For example, does a ship's level of torpedo protection affect the extent of a ship's damage or likelihood of being destroyed when torpedoed by submarines, does an escort's gun power affect the likelihood of it sinking or being sunk by enemy submarines in gun duels, and do the characteristics of flying boats affect their ability to sink submarines?

I've heard that the type of escort affects gun duels, but not the armament-Destroyers do well but corvettes die easily I cannot recall ever once seeing a gunnery duel with submarine event involving a destroyer despite commonly using large numbers of old destroyers on ASW/CP in Rule the Waves and TP in Rule the Waves 2 and once playing a Rule the Waves game to 1950 without ever building a minesweeper, instead using around 80 21kn 200t "destroyers" built at game start and, later on, some of the older fleet destroyers to cover ASW/CP requirements. I strongly suspect that the event only triggers for AMCs and MSes/KEs, or at the very least is much more likely to trigger for AMCs and MSes/KEs than for DDs.
As to whether unit quality affects what happens in the events, I did a couple test runs in Rule the Waves to try evaluating different styles of minesweeper for ASW/CP (armored 500t 5", armored 500t 4", unarmored 500t 5", unarmored 500t 4", and basic 200t); my recollection is that bigger minesweepers won gunnery duels more often than the smaller minesweepers did but were also less likely to be involved in gunnery duels and more likely to get torpedoed, and the larger minesweepers were enough more expensive than the smaller minesweepers that it more or less came out to a wash. I don't recall there being any notable differences between the various large minesweepers other than cost, though. I haven't yet taken the time to try something similar in Rule the Waves 2.
