So here's a quandary. I am in the midst of writing up the aircraft in my DLC AAR and am confronted with early Flying Boats having a listed range of 132nm while in the era I am writing in Italy was proudly boasting of its 1200 mile+ ranged flying boats.
Is it reasonable to declare that the difference is that a record-setting flying boats would be stripped of anything military and vastly overloaded with fuel to accomplish this, or is that x10 range difference so big that it is just best to ignore it altogether and not bring up the matter in an AAR? I'm inclined to proceed with the former, but if the literary license involved would be too outrageous then I will avoid such matters.

As far as I understand, the range is for there and back again, so the real range of your flying boats already would be 264 nm. Doubling that again seems reasonable from the data of the CANT Z.501 Gabbiano, for 528 nm. Going for much more doesn't seem too realistic, however.

You can confirm this by looking at the ratio between the game files and displayed range.

It would be pretty reasonable for a record attempt to be made with a nonstandard aircraft - somewhat often, one specifically manufactured with design modifications for the record attempt. For example, the Vickers Vimy bomber which made the first nonstop trans-Atlantic flight had fuel tanks where a standard Vimy would carry bombs (allowing it to carry an additional ~350 Imperial gallons of fuel, for a total of 865 gallons of fuel on the aircraft), and I'm pretty confident that it wasn't carrying the two machine guns that an unmodified production Vimy bomber would have had.
Also, seawolf is correct that the game's range figures are for combat-radius and that something close to the rule of thirds seems to have been used to estimate that.

I have my answer then, I just wanted to head off potential declarations of "implausible!" from those that would care before I wrote anything into life. Thanks all!

Here's a second question. Given that the parking break will be taken off this AAR shortly I'd like folk's opinions on my deleting some posts in the thread. Due to my multiple long stops there's a lot of "Hey when will you start writing this again", and I feel that those comments - while definitely ok at the time given circumstances - detract from the flow of the story. ...if I had ever really developed a flow...
I would keep comments (even negative) that related to the story or were for humorous intent, but I'd like to make it more friendly to someone who might discover it for the first time in coming months. So what say ye, intrepid reader?
(obviously I could just do this, but I don't want anyone to feel bad that I deleted their comment with explanation)

After all, I'm after the juicy DLC details, not the pride of having the most numerous annoying comments.

It's an AAR thread, so deleting stuff that doesn't add to the AAR itself would definitely be fine with me.

Alrighty, I will prune the thread sometime later today then. And, just to share a tidbit, I will be starting to run the game today so-as to ensure that it meshes well with the latest update (which is beta119, as you can see from my previous images quite a ways on from 68 where I started). Presuming all goes well, then I'll have the progress of 1924 to report, later this week...

A question about the presentation of my AAR; would the below larger images be better? Initially I went for Photobucket's "Medium" size, because some of the aircraft pictures will be low res. (example of my last post with Large images) ---
...
...
& text, obviously, could be increased to 12pt.
