Other than as main guns for the smallest of destroyers/corvettes in the early years or as secondaries on minesweepers(again in the early years) what's the point of 2" guns? They can't be made into DP guns(yet),which is about the only real use I can potentially see for them, and they are outclassed by 3" guns.
I'm guessing they're in the game because they're historical and that's about it. I have no problem with that and if that's the case and the devs don't plan on using them in any other way then just say so and we can stop right there. I hope they will find additional ways to use them though. Multi-barrel AA mounts in the 41-60mm range were a thing and I would, especially at the higher end of that range, count those as HAA and not MAA. Giving 2" guns a small bonus vs submarines or for clearing minefields would push their use in those areas. Giving them an autoloader option would also keep their use up for small combatants.
Does anyone use them in game? If so why do you use them? I seem to recall some math being done in RtW1 that supported their massed use as fire starters early game.

It would actually cool to see 2" DP guns as anti-missile guns

I pretty much never use guns smaller than 4" outside of early DDs. 2" guns have the same shell weight as 3" guns (for some reason) but less range, and the rate of fire in the game engine appears to be capped at 4rpm anyways.
As for 57mm AA, it would be kinda cool I guess, but I'd rather have the 3" radar guided autoloading AA be as lethal as it should be. Plane eating, missile eating, shell spewing death mounts.

I always put one on larger ships as a salute gun

None, there is no use. Even a garbage 500 ton destroyer can take an insane number of hits from one without sinking. Literally the weakest ship possible in the game. My personal minimum is 4".

As to potential use as a DP caliber, remember that DP guns are considered to be heavy anti-aircraft artillery within the game. 2" (50.8mm) is not a heavy AA caliber historically, except maybe early in the First World War; certainly in the interbellum period or in the Second World War a gun of that size would have been a medium AA weapon.

Ok so not likely to see DP 2" guns...at least until we push tech into the 80s and get those 57mm range guns that seem so common on light combatants.

I would argue that those are still essentially anti-aircraft guns; the types of craft that carry such light weapons as a main gun are either designed for situations that aren't relevant in the game (e.g. riverine gunboats) or aren't really meant to be getting into gun duels with vessels of similar or larger size (e.g. ASW vessels, small minelayers, and missile corvettes).

Plus torpedo boats, but we don't get to design those and AFAIK they don't get any guns in the game.

If we could build motor torpedo boats, like the Patrol torpedoes of the US, Eboats of the Germany, or the MAS boats of the Italians, then we might be able to arm them with 2 inch guns aft. Might make for a fun boat but we can't.

You can build motor torpedo boats, they're just built through the Build Coastal Fortifications menu to a fixed design rather than through the Build Ships menu and use a predefined rather than player-generated design.

I know, I use them all the time, but I would like to build them and equip them, not the AI, thank you. I am smarter than the AI
