Hello everyone,
I haven't seen any dedicated thread about it on the forum, so here I am. In a nutshell : what was intended to be an expansion to RtWII will become instead RtWIII. This new game is intended to be released this October 2022 on both the NWS shop and Steam. The Steam page does not exist as of right now (18/05/2022 - 05/18/2022 if yer American )
(here is an attached picture of various drawing of ship superstructures, attached in the announcement)
What is your opinion of it ? If you intended to buy the expansion, will you still buy the game ? For my part, I have to admit that while I intended to buy the expansion for my game, I don't think I will pay for a new game - especially if it is released for the same price as RtWII, $35.

I have 100's of hours in RTW 1 & 2. I see no reason to believe RTW 3 will not deliver 100's more based on the list of added features. Further, RTW offers a unique experience that has yet to be effectively replicated in other games.
The conversion of RTW2++ into RTW3 is a non-issue for me. Perhaps that's because I am already a fanatic, but consider a couple other arguments. While RTW3 is notionally a "new game", it is obviously based on RTW2, and therefore a fairly well known quantity. The price increase in absolute terms is small (~$20 to ~$35). The increase seems necessary to compensate the developer for extra time put in, and feels very reasonable for what is an extremely niche product. The logistics of a standalone game versus a "DLC" or "expansion" are simpler - one download, no awkward versioning, simpler patching. I personally would rather pay once, up front, than deal with multiple paid DLC packages or a micro transactions model. The move into the Steam marketplace is welcome, and will hopefully bring more attention to a great game. However, Steam takes a cut of the sales price, practically necessitating an increase in price at least for that market just to retain the same return to the developer. It also reduces overhead to release RTW3 on Steam compared to RTW2 + a DLC.

As a note, it is our intention to have the game at a discounted price for the first week or so of the release...this gives everyone the chance to pick it up at a reduced price.

However the Steam decision pans out I'll still be purchasing on day one either there or preferably direct from NWS. I know I've been saying a lot lately about lack of communication and information, but now that we have a few pieces of news I'm certain RTW III will be something special.

It would be nice if we could purchase directly from the dev and get a steam key - no idea if that’s possible or practical, though
Regardless, I’m super hyped, and definitely planning to grab RtW3. The devs have been working on this for what… well over a year now? I think the upgrade to standalone is deserved, and makes it easier and probably cheaper for new people getting into the game.

Is there any change it will release on GOG? I'll buy it no matter what, but GOG is my preferred platform.

Really looking forward to this. Hopefully plenty of details (perhaps the yt preview playthrough suggested in another thread) on new mechanics ahead of release so we can jump straight in on release day. The new ship superstructures are so much nicer than before. Being on steam is great news, any clue at this time if that will include steams regional pricing adjustments?

Seconding the ideas of buying a Steam key directly from the devs and of making it available on GOG (since I'd probably buy the game on both platforms).

Is there any change it will release on GOG? I'll buy it no matter what, but GOG is my preferred platform. We would like to, but GOG appears to be more of a "we will add your game if we think it fits our platform" rather than "would you like to add our game to your platform" type of place...

I have to say I feel quite disappointed at the release date getting pushed so far back to October, I was expecting it during summer and not mid/late Fall. But it is understandable considering recent events and it means the game will be more polished so I'll deal with it.
Any chance we could have information on the changes to damage/penetration mechanics?

I'm really, really looking forward to 《RTW: Age of Sails》 coming out in the near future I think an even better development would be RTW: Rule the World, where there would be land battles as well as naval battles. The battle generation system in RTW is possibly the best at letting you be involved on so many levels of a war, where things happen outside your control but you can be involved in micromanagement as well. The tech levels that would then be applied to land warfare are at about the right level of detail I would want as well (except you'd be designing vehicles, artillery, and units as well as ships and planes). The biggest obstacle I'd see is geographical: 1, the pathfinding AI would be a lot harder with different terrain types and obstacles, and 2, you'd have to find a data source that would translate the historical geography to whatever terrain types would be used in the app.

I'm really, really looking forward to 《RTW: Age of Sails》 coming out in the near future Yes! Playing out Sepping's cross bracing effects (not to mention iron knees) on a pre-steam ships-of-the-line race...

I'm really, really looking forward to 《RTW: Age of Sails》 coming out in the near future Sorry, you misjudged your turn and have been caught in irons. The crew are working desperately to get you out of the wind. In the meantime, would you like to repair the damage caused by the sudden speed loss from being under full sail at the time?

Very excited. Will buy it on day one. Looking forward to better AI and ship officer and ship histories. It would be very cool to play as a poor nation and use a ship all the way from 1890 to 1950s. Just imagine the stories the ship has to tell. It would be the spirit of the nation!
